The half an hour long webinar will give a good explanation of what bilge water management is, why it is important and the current regulations in place. Most importantly it gives a thorough overview of the common oil water separation technologies available, including their advantages and limitations.

The webinar is also available as a free white paper download.

Bilge water from engine rooms and the proper disposal is one of the major pillars of current International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations. Annex I of MARPOL 73/78 contains the provisions for the prevention of pollution by oil. It came into force internationally on 2nd October 1983 and deals with the design features and requirements for tankers with a gross tonnage of 150 tonnes or more.

In addition to a general ban on the discharge of oil, the conditions for the discharge of mixtures containing oil are also specified here.

On this basis, one of the major challenges ship owners and operators face is finding the best suited technology for their vessels. Florian von Kempen, Sales Director at RWO, explains the reason for the webinar: "The question that often arises is not only as to which oily water separation system achieves the permissible ppm level for oil in engine bilge water, but also whether it can be operated economically for the company. Finding the right equipment is therefore a challenge many ship operators face and the webinar attempts to answer by comparing the features and costs of several systems with each other."

The information is available as an audio recording or as a comprehensive white paper, depending on each individual’s preference.
