The launch of the world’s first hybrid electric–powered expedition ship, MS Roald Amundsen, by Hurtigruten in 2019 ushered in a new era for the industry. A fire and explosion on board the Norwegian ferry Ytterøyningen in October of that year, however, raised questions about the safety of energy storage systems.
